The design studio Elements of DOMINO ZIRKULAR reverses the conventional linear design process. At the beginning stands not an idea, but the material: students survey and catalogue reclaimed timber from donor buildings they select themselves.
Inspired by Rem Koolhaas’ Elements of Architecture, they use this found „construction kit“ to develop new, circular building components. Detached from their original context, these elements tell their own stories and unfold a new, unexpected aesthetic. In collaboration with the Chair of Digital Design and Fabrication (T.T. Prof. Dörstelmann), students explore the digital fabrication of mono-material timber connections and build a prototype of their element using robotic manufacturing processes.
Architecture is conceived from the detail to the whole: the individual component gives rise to a spatial and design principle that shapes the entire project. At the same time, students investigate how each element influences and informs the housing concept. To demonstrate scalability, two real sites are available – one small-scale in Stuttgart, the other large-scale in a newly developed residential area.

Building on the studio, the implementation of a 1:1 demonstrator is planned as part of the IBA’27.
A one-day excursion with on-site visit is planned.

When? Wednesdays and Thursdays in the studio.
